Population Ageing is one of the most significant demographic changes in recent times. Ageing studies cross several disciplines including medicine, public health, sociology, and economics. Research in the area of ageing can contribute to the development of policies and programmes to improve the well-being of older adults and societies as a whole. The MPhil and PhD degree programmes in Ageing Studies are uniquely positioned to produce graduates with demonstrated competencies in research methodologies and who make original contribution to the field.
Students pursuing the MPhil Ageing Studies may request upgrade of their registration to the PhD if they have demonstrated the qualifications necessary for pursuing a PhD and in keeping with time requirements in the Regulations for Graduate Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees. An upgrade proposal must be presented and examined at an Upgrade Seminar. Direct entry to the PhD programme is possible for candidates who have completed research-based Master's degrees and meet the criteria outlined in the Regulations for Graduate Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees.
Students will be required to do at least nine graduate credits and at least three seminars. Additional credits/courses may be required depending on student’s background. Research undertaken for the PhD degree should be original and students should do independent work, under the guidance of their supervisors. A written thesis is submitted and an oral examination of the thesis is also required.
